TEXAS HOUSE LEADERSHIP APPOINTS HOUSE MEMBERS TO THE (TWIA) WINDSTORM INSURANCE OVERSIGHT BOARD
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1/13/2020
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Last week, the appointments for the Windstorm Insurance Legislative Oversight Board were made by Speaker Dennis Bonnen. The Board consists of 4 Texas House members and 4 Texas Senate Members and would be responsible for overseeing TWIA adequacy rates, proposed rules, and coverage availability. Representatives Herrero, Lozano, E. Thompson, and Morrison were appointed to represent the Texas House on the committee. Most notably absent from this list – Representative Todd Hunter. In the 2019 86th Legislative session, Rep. Hunter was stripped of his Chairmanship of the powerful Calendars Committee – being 1 of only 2 House Republicans without a Chair.
“I've been calling for this board to be filled ASAP for months. Residents’ rates have continued to rise over the years and TWIA has continued to work against the Coastal Bend rather than for us. We need a fighter in the Texas Legislature that will be effective for the community – not a performer. It’s time for change in the Coastal Bend,’ said Holguin.
“Rep. Hunter was a lobbyist for TWIA after changing parties. He was once one of the most powerful House Members in the Legislature and had the power to fix TWIA -- he absolutely refused to do so. It’s why he wasn’t appointed to the committee overseeing TWIA. He’s ineffective on the issue and resorts to putting on theatrical performances in front of the community to sell to them that he is a fighter for them – I don’t buy it.” said Holguin.
Sources inside the Capitol say that the reason he has lost his effectiveness is because of his well-documented double dipping of his position as a legislator and as a windstorm insurance attorney.
